Forex Leverage and Margin: Understand the Risk
Distinguish exposure, collateral and risk.
Technical terms explained
Leverage
The ratio between position exposure and the margin required under the applicable rules.
Margin
Collateral required to support a position. Free margin is the remaining amount available under the account and broker rules.
Exposure
The total position quantity or value whose price changes affect the account.
Leverage permits an exposure larger than the funds required as margin. Margin is collateral, not a fee and not your maximum loss. The same pip movement affects more money at a larger position size. Leverage limits and loss protections depend on product, client status and jurisdiction. A small margin requirement does not make a position safe.
Our operational rule
Estimate loss from position size and adverse movement, then allow for costs and execution uncertainty.
Worked example
At 30:1 leverage, a 30,000-unit exposure may require roughly 1,000 base-currency-equivalent margin under a simplified rule. That does not cap the loss at that margin.
Counterexample
Increasing leverage does not turn a weak hypothesis into a stronger one.
Watch for this mistake
Choosing size from available margin rather than the loss budget.
